Is It Legal to Bet on Sports Online in the United States?

Students have long been involved in legal sports betting on sites like this, whether it was a friendly wager between friends on the Super Bowl or competitions in fantasy leagues. This popular pastime has a long history. However, due to the extremely strict anti-gambling regulations in the United States, any type of internet sports betting was considered at best a “grey market” and at worst outright illegal until recently.

The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PAPSA) was overturned by the United States Supreme Court in May of 2018, opening the way for the legalization of online sports betting across the country. Each state is now responsible for its own regulations governing sporting wagers, and as a result, 14 states (and the District of Columbia) have legalized the practice in less than two years. Many other states are attempting to follow suit and legalize the practice.

Today’s law

Illinois

Although there does not appear to be an online sportsbook operating in Illinois at the moment, the state recently legalized both in-person and online sports betting, so it is only a matter of time before an operator sets up shop there.

Indiana

Since the state of Indiana legalized online sports betting in October of last year, a number of bookmakers, including DratKings, FanDuel, and BetRivers, have opened sportsbooks in the state, giving gamblers a wide range of options.

Iowa

Iowa lawmakers legalize online sports betting last summer, but they added some red tape to slow the industry’s growth. Individuals interested in placing bets online must first visit a licensed casino within the state to open an account until at least 2021. If the state continues to allow online sports betting, this requirement will remain in effect.

Michigan

Although online sports betting has been legal in the state since late last year, none of the major operators have yet to open shop. The situation in Illinois is very similar.

Mississippi

This southern state has legalized online sports betting, but bettors must visit a casino property to do so. This requirement undercuts the effectiveness of the state’s decision to legalize online sports betting. One tribal casino, on the other hand, has recognized the trend toward change and has already launched its own mobile sports betting app, which players can use while physically present at the casino.

New Hampshire State

The state of New Hampshire legalized online sportsbooks in June of 2019, but bettors can only place bets through the state lottery’s official joint venture with DraftKings. As a result, the market is currently devoid of competition.

Nevada

Because Nevada is home to Las Vegas and a sizable portion of the internet gambling industry in the United States, the state was initially exempt from the PAPSA laws. As a result, they have long provided legal routes for online sports betting, with the glitzy casinos on the Las Vegas strip providing support for the applications and websites. However, according to Iowa state law, new accounts can only be opened in person at a casino’s administrative building.

Oregon

Because the state of Oregon only allows sports betting through its state lottery, players will need to download the Oregon Scoreboard mobile app in order to place online wagers.

New Jersey is a state in the United States.

New Jersey was one of the first states in the country to legalize online sports betting, and it is now home to FanDuel, DraftKings, BetRivers, Fox Bet, Unibet, Parx, and Sugarhouse, all of which operate online sportsbooks. Atlantic City is in New Jersey, which was also one of the first states to legalize online sports betting.

Pennsylvania

Some of the major competitors in Pennsylvania’s thriving sports betting market include FanDuel, DraftKings, BetRivers, Fox Bet, Unibet, Parx, and Sugarhouse, which, like New Jersey, was an early pioneer in the movement to legalize sports betting.

Providence, Rhode Island

Players in Rhode Island, where sports betting is legal, have been able to place bets solely through a joint venture between the state lottery and bookmaker William Hill since the beginning of the year.

Tennessee

Although there does not appear to be a sportsbook available in the state of Tennessee as of yet, this is bound to change this year. Online sports betting has recently been legalized in Tennessee.

West Virginia (WV)

DraftKings and FanDuel have already begun operations in West Virginia, just in time for the start of the 2019 NFL season, after lawmakers approved online sports betting legalization in time for the season.

What about the next day?

Given that there are valid arguments for both proponents and opponents of gambling legalization, it is difficult to predict how state legislators will vote if the issue is brought before them. On the other hand, almost every state plans to hold a vote on a measure within the next few years, with the exception of Alaska, Florida, Idaho, Nebraska, North Dakota, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
